’80s

When people look at the eighties, they usually do so through a humorous lens. Big hair, rolled-up jacket sleeves, high-rise jeans, spandex, I get it. But amidst all that, there is some music that represents the decade well. Here are 5 songs that do just that.

1. You Give Love A Bad Name – Bon Jovi (1986)

This was the first pop song I absolutely loved. I still remember how happy I was to get this for Christmas when it was still hot on the charts. Thanks Sandy!

2. Pour Some Sugar On Me – Def Lepard (1987)

It’s all about the scrunched faces and air guitar with this song. Ripped jeans have made a comeback in Korea over the last year. Wonder what it’s like back home.

3. We are the World – Michael Jackson (1985)

With Jackson, Lionel Ritchie, Tina Turner, Cindi Lauper, Bruce Springsteen and many others, this mega group was the eighties.

4. Slice of Your Pie – Motley Crue (1989)

Def Leppard and Bryan Adams were more my thing when I got this album. I distinctly remember thinking, “This is NOT music,” until hearing Slice of Your Pie from Dr. Feelgood. Whatever clerk pointed this out to my parents seriously helped augment my musical interests.

5. Biko – Peter Gabriel (1980)

Not a pop song for dancing to, Gabriel sings Biko at major concerts for audience awareness and leaves people chanting after he’s finished.
